On a weekday afternoon in mid-August, the line at The Shore ran out the door. As the Orange County Register reported it, the line was families, kids just out of school and the occasional French bulldog, all waiting for shave ice and double-decker Spam musubi. The Shore belongs to chef Michael Campbell, and it sits next door to his Pacific Pearl Cafe. That cafe is still open, newly expanded, and it got his catering business started. Campbell also has a new counter at River Street Marketplace. That makes him one of the clearest threads in a change running through downtown San Juan Capistrano this year.
Mission San Juan Capistrano turns 250 on Sunday, November 1, 2026. The Mission Preservation Foundation points out that the milestone runs alongside the nation's own 250th. A few hundred yards away, River Street Marketplace opened in December 2024 as the town's newest gathering place, and it is spending that same anniversary season with a new lineup. Several of the original anchors have left. The spaces are going to South County operators and to concepts built for an ordinary Tuesday more than a special occasion. On the calendar, the oldest institution in town and its newest district keep landing on the same weekends.
Who Holds the Original River Street Spaces Now
River Street Marketplace opened after a long development process. It is roughly 60,000 square feet of indoor-outdoor space with farm-style architecture around a central green. Its opening restaurant roster leaned toward chef-driven dining. Vaquera, the steakhouse, was known for oak-grilled Wagyu bavette and Oaxacan cheese cornbread, and it sourced produce from The Ecology Center. Here is what has happened to those spaces in 2026:
| Space | Opening tenant | What changed in 2026 | Status in mid-October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Former Market by the Meat Cellar | The Market by the Meat Cellar | Final service March 1 | Part of the space is now Rylee + Cru, open since its Aug. 15 grand opening |
| 31904 Paseo Adelanto | Vaquera | Closed May 3; owners said they had decided to sell to an Orange County operator | Cowboy by Nick's, listed "coming soon, end of 2026" |
| 31856 Paseo Adelanto, Suite 110 | Capas Tacos | Reworked by chef Michael Campbell | Capo Comidas Californios, open with regular hours |
| 31896 Paseo Adelanto, Suite 204 | New tenant | Petite Canvas, a children's art studio | Opening Nov. 2 |
The Market by the Meat Cellar served its last meal on March 1. Rylee + Cru took part of that space. It's a children's clothing and lifestyle shop founded by Kelli Larson and her father, Kevin Murray. The San Juan Capistrano store is its third and its first in Orange County.
Vaquera closed on May 3. Sherry Villanueva, founder of Santa Barbara-based Acme Hospitality, told the Register that the group had "decided to sell the restaurant to a local Orange County operator so we can focus our energy closer to home." The space is going to Nick's. Its new concept, Cowboy by Nick's, was described in a May preview as casual and family-friendly with Western styling. The marketplace's own listing promises fire-kissed steaks, cocktails, Western hospitality and reasonable prices, and it gives the opening as "end of 2026." That timing could make it the last change of the anniversary year.
A Local Chef Builds on Home Ground
Capo Comidas Californios is the closest thing River Street has to a statement of intent. Campbell rebuilt his old Capas Tacos counter in the food hall with a broader menu, designed to sit closer to its neighbor, Capo Leisure House. In a release quoted by the Register, he described the concept as "honoring where we are: the history, the culture and most importantly the food native to this region."
Campbell spent his early career in kitchens like Michael Mina's RN74 in San Francisco and The Loft at Montage Laguna Beach, where he was chef de cuisine. His San Juan Capistrano lineup now runs from Pacific Pearl Cafe to The Shore to Capo Comidas. The Register noted that his recent work leans more casual. The Shore was already opening a second location in Dana Point at the end of August. With one chef holding three addresses in town, a meal in downtown San Juan Capistrano more and more often goes back to a single local kitchen.
The marketplace's event calendar has moved the same way, toward regular weeknight programming:
- Salsa Dancing: Friday, Oct. 16, 6 to 9 p.m.
- RSM Kids Club: Tuesday, Oct. 20, 10:45 a.m. to noon, with a craft led by incoming tenant Petite Canvas
- Ceramic Paint Night: Thursday, Oct. 29
- Halloween Trunk or Treat and Scavenger Hunt: Friday, Oct. 30, 5 to 7 p.m.
Petite Canvas serves ages 2 to 13. Its Oct. 20 craft comes 13 days before the studio opens on Nov. 2.
The Mission's Calendar, Date by Date
Most of the Mission's anniversary-year programming has been fixed since its calendar came out. The marketplace's events change week to week. Here are the Mission's dates from now through year's end:
- Tuesday, Oct. 13, 10 a.m. Historic bell ringing for Indigenous Peoples Day. Until the Nov. 2 changeover, the Artifact of the Month is a set of early-1900s Acjachemen baskets in the Acjachemen Exhibit.
- Friday, Oct. 23, 10 a.m. Historic bell ringing for the Feast Day of St. John of Capistrano.
- Sunday, Nov. 1, 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 250th Official Celebration, with the 250th bell ringing at noon and free birthday cupcakes from noon to 2 p.m.
- Monday, Nov. 2. The Artifact of the Month becomes the Sacramental Registers written in 1776, on view in the Mission Treasures Exhibit through Dec. 7.
- Saturday, Nov. 21. A new exhibit, "Photo Reproductions from the Archival Collection," opens.
- Thursday, Nov. 26. Closed for Thanksgiving.
- Friday, Dec. 18. Capistrano Lights opening night, followed by select dates Dec. 19 to 23 and Dec. 26 to 30.
The Mission's DÃa de los Muertos altar stays up through the anniversary weekend. The City's own 250th Anniversary Committee, which Mayor Pro Tem John Campbell and volunteer Jan Siegel serve on alongside the Mission, lists a commemoration of the Mission's founding at the Blas Aguilar Adobe. It's set for Saturday, Oct. 24, from 6 to 8 p.m., according to the SJC250 events page. The Mission's Capistrano Lights page puts the City's tree lighting on Saturday, Dec. 5.
The Permanent Addition on the Stone Church Ruins
Capistrano Lights now includes a digital projection show on the ruins of the Great Stone Church, "The Story of the Mission ~ In Sound and Light." The Mission calls it a new permanent nighttime exhibit, with the ruins it calls the "American Acropolis" serving as the screen. The anniversary calendar lists the show nightly at 6:05 p.m. during Capistrano Lights. Guests at the September Romance of the Mission gala saw a preview.
The rest of Capistrano Lights is the familiar version: tree lighting, Dickens-era carolers, a full-scale nativity, a lighted halo grove, a scented citrus grove, Community Christmas Trees, Family Wreaths and a harpist in the Serra Chapel. Any Capistrano Lights ticket also covers same-day admission to the Mission. During the event, the grounds are open from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. As of mid-October, the Mission still lists the full 2026 schedule as coming soon. The Mission is closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
The Weekends Where the Two Calendars Meet
The overlap is tightest over three stretches this fall.
Oct. 23 and 24. The Feast Day bell rings Friday morning. Ghosts & Legends, a family-friendly walking tour based in the Los Rios Historic District, runs evening slots both nights. The Blas Aguilar Adobe commemoration takes Saturday evening. The Shore and Capo Comidas are both open for an early meal before a tour.
Nov. 1 and 2. The Mission's 250th birthday falls on a Sunday. The next morning, the 1776 registers go on display inside the Mission and Petite Canvas opens its doors at River Street.
Dec. 5 through Dec. 30. The City's tree lighting starts the holidays, and Capistrano Lights follows on Dec. 18. Cowboy by Nick's has a target of end of 2026, so the former Vaquera space could reopen during the first season of the new projection show. That depends on the opening date, which River Street's undated listing doesn't pin down.
One more opening is further out. Wade's Coffee House is under construction at the Vermeulen Ranch Center on Del Obispo Street, and the Register's Oct. 6 roundup gives its timing as winter 2027.
